Kilcormac Historical Society was founded in 1981 to encourage people to take an interest in their history and heritage and to promote studies in local history. The interest was obviously there from the beginning as almost forty people attended the original meetings. The society arranged guest speakers on a wide range of topics and was also fortunate to have some very knowledgeable members who were only too pleased to share their stories and studies. As
the years progressed the society became more active in taking measures
to protect and preserve places and items of historical value. Members
were active in preserving and recording headstones in the old graveyard
in Ballyboy. The society collected the writings of our former parish
priest, Rev. Andrew Shaw and published his History of Ballyboy, Kilcormac
and Killoughey in 1989. This was so popular that it was reprinted again
in 1999. The society also published Kilcormac Parish Album, a pictorial
history of our parish, in 1996. |
![]() The society erected this stone to celebrate the centenary of the change of name from Frankford to Kilcormac. |
